Pilates

What is Pilates?

Pilates is a fantastic way to improve your body’s performance, get stronger, more flexible and have fun while exercising.

Joseph Pilates developed this movement system originally for Ballet dancers to help them build strength, particularly working on improving the core muscle system. His exercises however were quite challenging and can sometimes place quite a lot of strain on the spine and surrounding muscles. Although all Pilates classes are based on Joseph’s original exercise programme many of the exercises have been adapted in recent years.

Physio-Led Pilates

I have trained with the renowned Australian Physiotherapy & Pilates Institute (APPI). The APPI was founded by two Australian Physiotherapists. They combined their Physiotherapy knowledge with Pilates exercises and created safe and effective adaptations of the traditional exercises at various levels so that each exercise can be taught in a way that is suitable for everyone. Read more about the APPI here.

Physiotherapy and Pilates work so well together. My Physiotherapy exercises and knowledge helps create safe exercises for my Pilates students and my Pilates knowledge has really helped me improve my exercise prescription as a Physiotherapist.

It is fantastic to be able to offer my Physiotherapy Client’s ongoing support by continuing their rehabilitation within my Pilates classes.

Pilates with Ruth Bennett

I offer 1 – 1 and small group classes to my patients and the public. Classes are kept small because in my experience people have told me that they have been to large Pilates classes and have been worried that they are not doing the exercises properly and are doing more harm than good to their bodies.

There is no competition within my classes I just want you to feel more in control and in tune with your body. It is about allowing the mind and body to work together to create efficient, controlled and flowing movements and learning to apply the principles of Pilates to your everyday life. My Pilates students and patients often express to me that they feel improvements in their posture, a reduction of aches and pains and a lot more in control of their body.

Cost of 1-1 Sessions:
Initial Consultation (60 mins) £55
1-1 Follow Up sessions (45 mins) £45

Initial Pilates Assessment

Before starting my Pilates class you will need to come for an initial assessment where you can tell me about your medical history and I will identify specific areas that require improvement. This is useful for anyone but particularly if you have back pain or specific injuries. I then make sure that in class you understand the exercises and perform them at a level that is suitable for you.

Cost: Initial assessment (60 mins) £55

  • “Always look forward to Ruth's classes. You can go at your own pace and she makes sure you're safe at all times. Usually start the session feeling like a very old tortoise and end it feeling like a gazelle. She's an absolute wonder and I thank her for keeping me moving.”

  • “This is the best Pilates class I have ever attended and my level of fitness, strength and flexibility has improved more than I could have anticipated. Ruth brings her expertise as a Pilates teacher but also her yoga experience which means the class is very varied and pleasurable. From the start I have felt that she observes us all really carefully to check that we are doing the exercises correctly, she notices any niggles or soreness and it really feels like a Clinical Pilates class taught by a professional physiotherapist. It’s also great fun and Ruth creates a lovely, friendly atmosphere. I joined an established group but felt welcomed and included straight away. I really recommend this class.”

  • “Ruth is an excellent Pilates teacher! The classes accommodated up to 8 students so were small, friendly and individualised. As Ruth is also a trained physiotherapist, she had treated me for a back injury and subsequently a shoulder injury. I was more confident about attending her Pilates class as I felt I was coming to a safe environment and Ruth would tell me if I needed to modify a particular exercise. The classes were varied and contained elements of Pilates, yoga and Tai Chi and there was always a relaxation at the end of the class.I have learnt so much about my body and the importance of relaxation. Thank you Ruth!”

  • “Ruth has been teaching me Pilates in a small group for around a year. She is gentle and caring and her expertise has meant that despite my serious medical conditions, I have grown stronger and fitter. I can highly recommend Ruth as both a Physiotherapist and Pilates teacher.”
